Urgent Need in Haiti

Support Our Ongoing, Critical Efforts

Prosperity Catalyst provides women-led artisan businesses and small-holder farms with the support they need to be successful and sustainable through business and technical trainings and small investments. Our program is in jeopardy due to decreased available institutional funding. As you may be aware, Haiti frequently faces natural disasters and political upheaval; however, the Haitian people continue to be optimistic about their future as is Prosperity Catalyst.

How We Make a Difference Every Day

In 2017, we launched a beekeeping program to address the shortage of natural, high-quality beeswax for candles. Since then, we have trained 1,108 beekeepers in 32 groups across Haiti, who supply wax to artisans trained by Prosperity Catalyst to produce candles for sale. Through Prosperity Catalyst, the beekeepers also sell their pure natural honey and aromatic plants that we distill into essential oils.  All these products are sold locally and internationally.

If the beekeeper continues to reinvest profits in buying hives, she can have as many as 29 hives in 10 years, generating over $2,000 per year.

A Record of Progress for Women Since 2013:

NURTURED WOMEN-LED BUSINESS COMMUNITIES

  • Established 72 women-led artisan businesses, employing roughly 216 artisans

  • Sold $157,000 in artisan products in the US Market.

  • Our beekeepers planted over 25,000 trees to feed the bees and help combat CO2 emissions.

  • Provided leadership opportunities for women. Our 32 beekeeping groups and one regional association are headed by women who help guide decision-making and mentor other members.

  • Helped organize and partnered with the Nippes Regional Beekeeping Association to create an aggregation site where beekeepers can sell, store, and process their wax, honey and other farm products.

  • Produced 2,000 high-quality cotton reusable face masks and bottles of hand sanitizer and distributed COVID prevention and education kits to 1,000 households.

  • Collected and distributed 1 month food supplies, temporary shelters, hygiene and sanitation kits and apiary kits to 150 affected remote households in response to the 2021 earthquake.

TRAINED A COMMUNITY OF FEMALE LEADERS

  • 1,108 beekeepers, over 60% female in a country where, only 10% of beekeepers are female.

  • 64 people, the majority women, to produce bee hives locally and two artisans to sew beekeeping protective gear.

  • Each woman is able to keep her child in school longer with her hive's, farm’s or skill’s profits, starting a positive cycle fighting systemic poverty.

How Your Donation Will Help

  1. EXPAND: Expand the tree nurseries to include a range of plants and trees that can sink carbon and enhance the productivity of these farms. Expand the number of women-owned beehives.

  2. PLANT: Assist the beekeepers to plant over 50,000 new trees to create a lusher, more stable ecosystem.

  3. TEACH: Teach advanced beekeeping skills and introduce agroforestry techniques that will allow our beekeepers to improve the productivity of their soils.

  4. DIVERSIFY: Diversify farm production to include tree crops.

  5. ORGANIZE: Organize two more regional beekeeping associations and aggregation sites where they can store, sell, and add value to their farm products.

"It gives me great joy to witness the growth of the beekeepers program in Haiti. The women are finding their voices in a male dominated industry and establishing their leadership in rural communities that are striving for a better future.  I invite partners and friends to help us spread the word about Prosperity Catalyst's program and to join us as we continue to partner with the women to strengthen their enterprises."

“In 2017, I was invited to a meeting with Prosperity Catalyst to talk about a beekeeping training program. At that time, I thought badly of bees. Bees were always aggressive as they protected their honey in the traditional log beehives that I had managed in the past. My whole view of bees changed as I learned new techniques for handling bees safely. Now, I work in my apiary without fear, even though I am surrounded with many hives full of bees. I also received a one-month technical training from Prosperity Catalyst where I learned how to build modern beehives. I am now earning money building beehives to support beekeepers PCat is training in the Nippes.
